A stage direction is a movement order given to an actor. But, because the actor is assumed to be facing the audience, their movements will appear to be opposite. “Stage left” means to move to the actors left, but the audience will see him or her moving to their right. A stage direction must always include the word “stage”, otherwise the actor doesn’t know which way to move.
