Cuneiform was writing system that developed in Mesopotamia. It was usually seen on clay tablets to record taxes, trade, and distribution of food. This was an innovation as it aided in record keeping which a civilization needs to function and develop, such as education and keeping track of history and laws.

It was basically the first language of writing so not only was it a way of written communication. it inspired other countries and people to write.
