How does carbon-14 help scientists determine the age of a fossil?

It is used to determine the age of an ancient object. The process is called radiocarbon dating. Carbon-14 is a naturally present isotope that is produced when cosmic rays collide with nitrogen and as a result it is oxidized to be become CO2.
