Why did the shogunates close japan ports and ban foriegn trade?

The ports were closed and Japan was isolated because they were afraid that the Christian missionaries and the merchants would corrupt the people and make them abandon their customs and tradition. So they blocked it all to preserve their culture where the Shoguns and the Daimyos would rule with Samurai and similar things.
