Nathan and Steven stacked boxes on a shelf. Nathan lifted 13 boxes and Steven lifted 15 boxes. The boxes that Nathan lifted each weighed 12 lb more than the boxes Steven lifted. Determine the expression which represents the total number of pounds Nathan lifted. Let s represent the weight of the boxes that Steven lifted.

we assume the two boys lifted the same amount of weight of boxes. Let s be the weight of the boxes Steven lifted. Hence,

13 ( s+12) = 15 s

where s + 12 means that the box lifted by Nathan weighed 12 more than that of Steven.

we solve,
s = 78 pounds
such that Nathan's is 90 pounds.
