You are ordering a meal and have $15 to spend on. The restaurant charges 6% sales tax and you plan to leave a 15% tip. The equation c= x+0.06x+0.15x gives the total cost c of your meal, where x is the cost before tax and tip. What is the maximum amount you can spend before tax and tip?

just solve the equation, x + 0.15x + 0.06x = 15
1.21x = 15,
x = $12.39 (nearly)

Answer:

The maximum amount you can spend before tax and tip is:

$ 12.397

Explanation:

x represents the cost before tax and tip.

Also, we have a total of $ 15 to spend on.

The equation which represents the total cost of our meal is given by:

c= x+0.06x+0.15x

This means that:

c\leq 15\\\\i.e.\\\\x+0.06x+0.15x\leq 15\\\\1.21x\leq 15\\\\x\leq (15)/(1.21)\\\\x\leq 12.397

The answer is: $ 12.397
