If a cell is placed in salt water, the water will leave the cell by the process of osmosis. During the process of osmosis, liquid will pass through the walls of living cells.  The opposite of osmosis is diffusion. Diffusion deals with the movement of molecules as opposed to osmosis which deals with the movement of a liquid.
