The altitude of the cylinder is segment BC.

A line keeps going in both directions. A ray goes in one direction. Segments have two ends that do not keep going because they stop at those two points on the plane.

I saw the image that should have accompanied this problem. The altitude of the cylinder is SEGMENT BC.

Altitude is defined as the perpendicular segment from the plane of one base to the plane of the other base. When you see a cylinder that has a height in unit measure, it simply means that the height is the length of the cylinder's altitude.
