First you must convert the fractions to have the same common denominator:
1/8 = 1/8
1/4 = 2/8
Now you can add them together:
1/8 + 2/8 = 3/8
They ate 3/8 of the pie

They ate 3/8 of the pie because 1/4=2/8 .and 1/8+2/8=3/8. Hope this helps
