What was the general attitude of many Americans toward the U.S. purchase of Alaska from Russia?

Most Americans mocked it. The purchase was known as Seward's ice box because that is all Alaska was perceived to be.

i believe the answer is: Most Americans mocked it.

The purchase was mocked because Alaska was known to barely have any natural resources and consist of large number of land covered by ice that cannot be made into agricultural fields or farm. Because of this, The purchase was known as Seward's ice box
