Most of Russia’s population lives west of the Ural Mountains. The region found to the east of the Urals is Siberia, an area many people find uninhabitable due to extreme weather.

This is Plato's (Edmentum's) exact answer. Hope this helps luvs <3

The majority of Russia's population is found in the more European part, where there aren't vast expanses of frozen soil and frozen wood which also prohibit people from living there. Considering how that place looks, it doesn't come to a real surprise that it isn't very heavily populated.
