What makes a story a tragedy a opposed to simply a story with an unhappy ending

It makes a tradgedy if a character gets hurt or passes or as simple as losing a toy.

A tragedy usually consists of a love story so if you wrote about a marriage and maybe one of the partners killing the others that would be a tragedy, just search up some Shakespeare plays most of them are tragedies
