George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion is based on Pygmalion and Galatea, an Original Mythological Comedy written by W. S. Gilbert, first presented in 1871, but was originally based on the Pygmalion story, in which, according to Ovid, Pygmalion was a Cypriot sculptor who carved a woman out of ivory, and fell in love with it, after which she became alive.
