In the late 1800s, anti-chinese sentiment grew because labor unions promoted the idea that chinese immigrants were taking american jobs by working for lower pay.

Anti-Chinese sentiment in the United States has existed since the late 19th century. It has kicked off from 1864, when the Chinese built the Transcontinental Railroad. In 1882, The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was implemented.

Large numbers of Chinese migrant laborers were imported to the United States in the middle 19th century.
