Dalton thought that water contains only one hydrogen and one oxygen. He thought that nature would be as simple as possible so for Dalton his chemical formula for water is OH. But later Gay-Lussac did an experiment and from that experiment he found out that Dalton's water formula is not only OH but it is H2O.
