I believe the best answer for this question would be "dramatic irony." Dramatic irony is when the audience is aware of something important that the characters in the story are not aware of yet. Sophocles uses dramatic irony in Oedipus the King, as the audience would know what is going to happen before the end of the story. Hope this helps.
