Democracy is a system of government where the citizens exercise power by voting. The first instance of democracy occurred in Athens during the 5th century BCE. It is a form of government that is ruled by the people, and for the people where eligible citizens are involved and vote for changes in their society.
In a representative democracy the citizens elect representatives from among themselves.
