Boris Yeltsin was the first popularly elected President in Russia following the fall of the Soviet Union. He was elected on June 12, 1991 with 57% of the popular vote in Russia. Following his election his presidency was mired in political and economic scandal. His presidency was marked by corruption, economic collapse, and enormous social and political problems.
