Descartes was famous for much of his work in both philosophy and mathematics which contributed to the Scientific Revolution. In Mathematics he was famous for creating algebraic equations to express two dimensional shapes and also to allow shapes to be expressed as algebraic equations. In philosophy Descartes is most commonly known for his statement, "I think therefore I am." He sought to construct his worldview based entirely on logic, reason, and empiricism. A simple construction of this was the idea that his thinking meant that he indeed existed this existential question of existence would continue to drive philosophy for the centuries to come.
