Convergent plate boundaries lead to subduction. Subduction occurs when one tectonic plate rides over the edge of another tectonic plate which sinks into the mantle as they converge.

The type of stress that causes deformation leading to earthquakes at convergent plate boundaries is TENSION or TENSIONAL STRESS. The deformation can be very huge and is the reason why mountains and mountain ranges are made and are in alternate with valleys.
