How can scientists use the fossil record in sedimentary rock to learn which species lived at different times in Earth's history?

The higher to the ground surface the rock is, the 'newer' it is and so by looking at one piece of sedimentary rock you will be able to see which animals were present when in that certain area, you can then compare this to sedimentary rock somewhere else.
