What is not a way to create tension in a plot?

The secret to creating tension within a plot comes with the characters. If all of the characters in a story get along swimmingly, there will be no conflict and this will be a very dull plot. The characters need to have something driving them instead, and ideally this will clash with the goals of another equally strong character.
