What contribution did Alexander the Great make to the Hellenistic civilization

if there was not him there would be no Hellenistic civilization. His army efforts made way for Greek culture as far as Western India, Afghanistan and Southern Egypt. Unbelievable given the fact that before him and his father Philip the Greek world was almost one thousand of self-governed city-states "poleis".
