For some time, the English had little interest in colonizing foreign areas because the people there were greatly satisfied with their lives as they were, the were happy with it and because of the threat of Spain due to the fact that Spain had demonstrated certain interest in colonizing the Americas.

During the long reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603) England was on the sidelines of the European desire to colonize the New World Christopher Columbus had encountered in 1492.
