The answer is the presence of buds on the nodes.

Node is a segment of the stem where buds are attached. A segment between two nodes is known as internode. Node is not swollen, and more important, there are no nodes on the roots, nor the origin of roots is from nodes. Nodes are easily identified thanks to buds attached to them.
