The Fourteenth Amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws, and was proposed in response to issues related to slaves following the Civil War. It states equal rights and freedom for all. It was adopted on July 9, 1868 as a Reconstruction Amendment. It was contested by Southern States, but they were forced to ratify it to regain representation in Congress. The Fourteenth Amendment is one of the most prosecute parts of the Constitution.
