Why would governments most likely restrict or interfere with elections

The government is likely to restrict or interfere with the elections to make sure that a fair and just election will happen. Some of those who run for a position are already part of the government. The government must be strict that these candidates do not abuse the position they once had in the government to be used in their re-election.
