Aerobic Respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen to breakdown glucose completely while Anaerobic respiration occurs in oxygen deficient situations to only partially breakdown glucose.

(that is why aerobic respiration produces more than 10 times the energy that anaerobic does because with anaerobic energy is still stored in the products that may be either lactic acid or ethanol)
