The answer is a scanning tunneling microscope.

The scanning tunneling microscope that uses a probe to map atoms on the surface of a specimen. It has a good resolution (0.1 nm in lateral resolution, and 0.01 nm in depth resolution). It was named tunneling because, after a voltage is applied, electrons tunnel through the vacuum in between.
