Dred Scott dared to sue for freedom for him and his wife, but because they were considered property and not citizens they were unsuccessful in their attempt.

Answer:

Dred Scott filed a very important lawsuit for the history of the United States that ended in 1857 at the US Supreme Court, Scott was an African-American requesting freedom for him, his wife and their children, because they were going to be sold for separated. The Supreme Court resolution was negative for Scott, since he determined that African Americans and their descendants be free or slaves, were not considered citizens.
