Why are food preservatives added to food?

Food additives are used to increase shelf life, meaning the food can sit in grocery stores and/or our homes for a longer time before spoiling.

The preservatives discourage the enzymes and stop the process of oxidation, so that it becomes a bad place for microorganisms to stay
