Why is the mean not affected by very high or low values in the data?

Sorry if I am wrong:
The median is found by listing the data points in numerical order from smallest to largest. Then you have to find the datum in the middle. So it doesn't have to do much about the high or low values in the data.

Why is the mean not affected by very high or low values in the data?
