Why were some people of raid to ratify the constitution when it was first drafted?

Because many viewed the states as separate from each other, and by ratifying the constitution, they would all be wrapped up into one country with certain federal laws that everyone had to follow. The states would no longer have full reign to their own laws because they would have to follow federal laws that didn't necessarily share individual state's beliefs.
