1) 1/4+2/4=3/4
2) 9/10-8/10=1/10
3) 2/12+5/12=7/12
4) 2/6+2/6=4/6 (or 3/4 simplified)
5) 9/12-8/12=1/12
6)2/8-1/8=1/8
7)2 3/8+2 2/4
Let’s figure this out together.
For the first part we know that whole numbers in this question are 8/8
And because 2 is a whole number that it is 8/8 two times. So 16/8. Next we add the 3 because, although it’s not a whole number, it’s still a part of the equation. 19/8
Now for the next part of this equation we need to make sure that the denominator is the same as the denominator to the first part. (In a fraction numerator/denominator)
The denominator in the first part was 8. In this part it is 4. To be able to add, subtract, multiply, or divide, the denominator has to be the same. So we multiply 2/4 by 2/2to get 4/8. It’s not changing the quantity. Instead just the way it’s shown.
Again, 16/8 and add a 4. 20/8.
Bring the two parts together.
19/8+20/8=39/8
Now to make it a mixed number we need to find out how many times 8 can go into 39. The answer is 4 times. With 7 left over. So 4 7/9
8) doing the same thing we get the answer to be 35/10+24/10=59/10
=5 9/10
