The Earth is not held in place, but rather in a constant orbit around the sun. However, this could be reffered to as "in place" since the Earth has not moved outside this orbit since the birth of the universe. So, you ask what keeps the Earth in a constant, nonfluctuating orbit? The pull of gravity coming from the sun and the other planets.
