i assume this is what you meant...
8
/2 = 144- 36y
**multiply 2 to both sides
**get all terms to one side
0= 8
+ 72y -288
time to factor
8(y+12)(y-3)
y+ 12 =0 --> y= -12
y - 3 =0 --> y= 3
