A result of the media showing the United States the violence against peaceful protestors in Birmingham was the passing of civil rights legislation.
The Birmingham movement occured in 1963 and constituted a campaign of nonviolent direct action that resulted in conflicts between young black students and white civic authorities.
The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964 and put an end to segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin.
