First you add 26 and 9 together, and get 35. Then you divide that by 5, and you get 7.

5a-9=26
step 1: turn your negative 9 to a positive remove it from the side its on and add it to 26
now you have 5a=35
35 divided by 5 is 7
therefor a=7
