How does having knowledge of the historical context help understand the text? (like in literature)

If the story is historical fiction, even though it is fiction it could help to have knowledge about the history being fictionalized by the author. This meaning that the author based their story off an historical event or included some historical info and having that back ground information will lead to you having a sense or a better idea about the plot of the fictional story or events.
