Why does Ralph become the leader of the group at the beginning of the novel?

C. because Ralph is intelligent and innovative.

Ralph represents the civility of man. Jack, in contrast, represents the savagery. It is true, also, to say that Ralph is charismatic and influential, but this stems from his intelligence and innovation. An example being that he sets about building huts while the other boys play.
