India became independent from Britain in the 1950's. Till then there was a Governor General at the head and he was a Britisher. Lord Mount Batten was the last British Governor general in India. India celebrates its independence day on 15 August and its Republic Day on 26th January every year. Rajaji was the last person and the only Indian to hold the post of Governor General.
