Discuss the provisions of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and explain the far-reaching consequences of its passage in 1854.

Though it established the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, the Kansas Nebraska Act also gave the residents the right to vote on whether or not they would allow slavery into their territories. This upset the delicate balance between slave state and Free State. It later lead to the start of the American Civil War.
