The puritans wanted to purify the Roman Catholic. They saw what was being practiced and allowed in the church and saw things the corrupted church officials did and they did not like it. They wanted to cleanse the church and bring it back to what it used to be.
Puritans were not like the separatists, who separated themselves from the church and religion. Seperatists were modern day atheists.
