What remains after a low-mass or medium-mass star dies?

A star turns into a "white dwarf" once it dies. It's also one of the densest forms of matter that ever existed in the universe, and is usually surpassed by black holes being the densest among them all. A white dwarf is also as massive as the Sun, but smaller than that.
