Why did the Europeans want African slaves who were farmers?

Because their whole economy was based on crops. They needed farmers because farmers knew how to work on the land, and they had many acres of land and plantations of pretty much anything, from corn and wheat, to tobacco, cotton, and pretty much any type of crop you can think of.
