Many of the soldiers in Sherman army were veterans of other campaigns. Some fought at Bull Run while others were at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Shiloh as well as other battles that were fought. They were also men who were hand-picked as being healthy and well-trained. They also had a temper where they more eager for battle compared to other soldiers during that time.
