Tax rate is 6 1/2%. So we need to multiply 6 1/2% by 8.50 to find the tax.
First convert 6 1/2% to decimal by dividing by 100 (move decimal 2 places left).
6.5% = .065
now multiply
8.50 × .065 = .55
6 1/2% tax on 8.50 is .55 (55 cents)
