What steps do scientists do to protect fossils one they have been found?

They usually just brush them down with brushes to remove any excess dirt surrounding the fossil until it is completely exposed in order to facilate the extraction process. Since they are very VERY fragile they can not be digged up by conventional means and must have a lot of patience.
