In the fourteenth century, Europeans killed and ate their draft animals to survive. During the Great Famine, as it was known, the vast majority of population in Europe were peasants who, unlike the nobles, did not possess reserves of food supply. The unfavorable weather conditions make it impossible for them to grow any kind of crop. As a consequence, they had to resort to slaughter their draft animals as the only hope of surviving.

One thing that Europeans in the fourteenth century did during times of famine to survive was that they "killed and ate their draft animals," since this was a last resort and did not bring them a long-term advantage.
