The bourgeoisie specifically referred to the middle class, and literally is a term for those people who live in the city. This group first came to be during a time of industrialization and lead drove capitalism to new heights. We first encountered the term in the early Middle Ages, around the eleventh century, as cities started to emerge, and became a popular term in the centuries that followed.
